Can ADHD get worse with age or if left untreated?

ADHD does not typically get worse with age, but it can certainly change. Here’s how:

  • Hyperactivity often diminishes: Many people find that the hyperactive component of ADHD becomes less pronounced as they get older.
  • Inattention and impulsivity may persist: Challenges with focus and impulsivity can continue into adulthood and may even become more apparent as life’s demands increase.
  • Untreated ADHD can lead to difficulties: If ADHD is not managed effectively, it can contribute to challenges in relationships, work, and overall well-being. This can sometimes be perceived as a worsening of ADHD, but it’s often the consequence of untreated symptoms.
  • Life transitions can amplify challenges: Major life changes like starting a new job, having children, or experiencing loss can make ADHD symptoms more noticeable.

It’s important to remember that:

  • Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial: Seeking support and developing coping strategies can significantly improve quality of life for people with ADHD.
  • ADHD is manageable: With proper treatment and support, individuals with ADHD can lead successful and fulfilling lives.
  • Everyone’s experience is unique: How ADHD evolves over time varies from person to person.
